Strengthening Implementation Reporting: A Practical Guide for Development Programs

In humanitarian and development work, strong programming depends on the ability to design, document, and adapt interventions across diverse contexts. The TIDieR-WASH Checklist is a practical tool that standardizes how WASH interventions are reported, offering a clear and consistent way to describe what was implemented and how. Although originally created for WASH, its structured approach can be applied across many sectors to improve documentation, strengthen reporting quality, and support organizational learning. This guidance document introduces the TIDieR-WASH Checklist and outlines how teams can use it to enhance program design, delivery, and cross-programmatic learning.

To support the practical application of the TIDieR-WASH Checklist, this guidance document includes four case study summaries from CARE programs. Each case study demonstrates how checklist items can be clearly described and reported when documenting interventions within program materials.

• Applying the TIDieR-WASH Checklist to CARE Kenya’s Passive Inline Chlorination Pilot and Trial Intervention in Healthcare Facilities

This guidance was developed through the CARE–Emory Implementation Science Partnership. The core team leading this collaboration included Matthew C. Freeman, Jedidiah S. Snyder, Lilly A. O’Brien, Emily Ogutu Awino, Jonny Crocker, and Erika Canda from Emory University, along with Sara Hoffman, Florence Santos, Paul Bagtas, and Caitlin Shannon from CARE.
